Responsible Play Information Centres open

 

Recently, a new responsible gambling education and problem gambling prevention initiative was introduced. Responsible Play Information Centres are operating at two of B.C.’s largest casinos – River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond and Edgewater Casino in Vancouver. The pilot project is the result of a strategic alliance involving the Province of British Columbia, British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), gaming service providers, the City of Vancouver and City of Richmond.

“Most people gamble for fun and entertainment and within a sensible spending limit,” says Gail White, Director of Social Responsibility for BCLC and BC Partnership for Responsible Gambling Steering Committee member. “We are committed to encouraging responsible use of our products.”

The booth-style centres have innovative design features for easy access and visibility from the gaming floor. Responsible Gambling Information Officers, who are trained in prevention education and counselling, are on hand to provide education, support and referral to customers.

The officers are knowledgeable about information related to odds of winning and losing, how particular games work, the concept of randomness, house advantage and other responsible gambling information and strategies. They have received training to help them respond to customers in distress and provide referral to professional free treatment services available through Government’s Problem Gambling Program.

“Addressing problem gambling and promoting responsible play is a shared responsibility,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The City is proud to be a partner in supporting this innovative social initiative.”

The development of Responsible Play Information Centres supports both BCLC’s and the Province’s commitment to reduce incidents of problem gambling and the harmful impacts of excessive gambling and to ensure the delivery of gaming in a manner that encourages responsible gambling and healthy choices.
